Flatulence Umm, What's Normal And How Can You Control It

Flatulence

We all recognize the statements made with this particular problem:: such as, Okay, who cut the cheese? Or P. U. you stink. : )

Passing gas is a natural function of a healthy digestive system The average person releases an average of 14 to 18 times each day.

Most gas is produced in the intestine by undigested carbohydrates. Instead of being broken down in the stomach, some starches enter the small intestine still intact.

The intestine does not produce the enzymes necessary to digest two specific carbohydrates. They are raffinose and stachyose, so they just sit in the small intestine, until the bacteria that normally inhabit the bowel, ferment them, causing your body to release gas.

Learn How To Control Your Gas:

Dietary sugars, sorbitol, lactose and fructose, can contribute to gas. Limit foods that contain these ingredients, such as milk and artificial sweeteners, to help reduce flatulence.

Starches are also major contributors to gas. Success with diet change relies on a process of trial and error, so eliminate different elements of your diet until you identify which is most effective.

If you are sensitive to certain foods taking a gas medicine or lactase supplement before eating will reduce your gas. Gas medicine is most likely to help with the breakdown of vegetables that would otherwise contribute to gas, while lactase supplements are good for gas caused by lactose.

Stop swallowing air. Some of the gases are simply from the air we swallow. You can reduce the amount of air swallowed by not chewing gum or sucking on hard candies for example.

Some herbs that may be helpful reducing gas include peppermint, dill, sage and thyme. These herbs are known as carminative herbs and are known to soothe the digestive tract. Including them in your diet can help.

If you pass gas significantly, more than 18 times per day, it may be a sign of a more serious digestive problem, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, in which case your doctor may be able to prescribe medication that can help.
