Do you need more energy? Do you need help burning more calories? Green Tea Benefits. the secret you might not know about.
Those long-lived people in Asia are onto something all right. They’ve been drinking green tea and lots of it—for centuries, probably as long as 4,000 years. But only recently have scientists and laboratory research confirmed the health benefits associated with certain green tea extracts.
The Journal of the National Cancer Institute published the results of a study indicating that drinking green tea reduces the risk of esophageal and other cancers in Chinese men and women by nearly sixty percent.
University of Purdue researchers also found that a compound in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells. There is research indicating that drinking green tea lowers total cholesterol levels while improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol. In addition, green tea has been shown to improve immune function, and to help alleviate inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and cardiovascular disease by inhibiting the formation of abnormal blood clots. Its anti-bacterial effect can help prevent tooth decay and even food poisoning! There’s also emerging evidence that green-tea can help with weight maintenance or weight loss. A study at the University of Geneva in Switzerland showed that dieters who were given a combination of caffeine and green tea extract burned more calories from the same activity than those given only caffeine or a placebo. The Thermogenic—or, metabolism-boosting—properties of green tea endear it to dieters around the world. In the last 60 years, there has been a 10-fold increase in our intake of soda – in fact, the average American drinks about a gallon every week. These sugary drinks appeal to people because of their sweet taste and low cost, so many people use them frequently as a pick-me-up. But sodas also contain a large amount of empty calories – there are about 10 teaspoons of sugar in a typical 12-ounce can - and chronic consumption can contribute to obesity. In addition, the sugars and acid in soda can dissolve tooth enamel and promote the formation of cavities.
Millions of people also love the smell, taste and shared experience of their morning coffee - Americans drink more than 400 million cups per day. But we’re moving away from plain black coffee and, for many, coffee-based beverages have become the drink of choice. Plain black coffee is calorie-free, but many popular coffee drinks are loaded with fat and sugar – and some drinks top out at nearly 600 calories. So while coffee and sodas might provide a lift, they may do so at a price. The secret of green-tea is that it is exceptionally rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a particularly powerful anti-oxidant—it even inhibits the growth of cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. EGCG has been found to be twice as powerful an antioxidant as resveratrol, the famous polyphenol in red wine that limits the negative effects of such unhealthy habits as smoking and a high-fat diet.
